Neurointerventional techniques are at the core of minimally invasive care for cerebrovascular disease — from acute stroke and intracranial aneurysm to arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and arterial stenosis. The steep technical learning curve, however, has long been a barrier for frontline clinicians, particularly at the county- and community-hospital level.

At Shanghai Donglei Brain Hospital (BDG), that challenge has been met head-on by an interventional team that has spent more than a decade operating at the very frontier of the field. The team is led by Prof. Song Donglei, one of China's pioneer neurointerventionists and the country's first generation of Onyx embolization experts for cerebral arteriovenous malformation.

Twenty years ago, Prof. Song was already introducing Onyx-based AVM embolization to China, becoming one of the nation's earliest and most experienced practitioners. He is also a senior preceptor for Pipeline embolization device (PED) treatment of complex aneurysms, having trained a generation of Chinese neurointerventionists in flow-diversion techniques.

Building on that same team, the 10th Donglei Brain Neurointerventional Training Class opens this September. Prof. Song is the lead curriculum advisor; the rest of the teaching faculty are BDG interventionalists who operate on these patients every day.

Six BDG clinicians teach the entire program. Every faculty member continues to perform these procedures at the hospital on a weekly basis — not part-time, not retired.

Two additional BDG faculty round out the program: Dr. Tan Shubin (peri-operative complication management for neurointerventional procedures) and Dr. Yin Cheng (transvenous embolization of cerebral AVMs).

Course Agenda

The provisional schedule is organized into two complementary tracks: a didactic morning followed by a case-based afternoon on Day 1, and a half-day hands-on Mentice simulator lab on Day 2.
